Diwali in the NHS

About Event

Diwali is the Festival of Lights—a time to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Within the NHS, it offers a powerful opportunity to unite staff and patients in joy and reflection.

Sample Activities for a Hospital-Based Diwali Event:

  • Lighting the Diyas Ceremony: Staff and patients gather to light lamps symbolising healing, peace, and unity . The lamps can be battery operated mini electric candles as we are aware of the fire risk in the UK and what is permitted in a closed space as per rules.
  • Interfaith Diwali Message Board: Team members from all backgrounds share what Diwali means to them
  • Cultural Showcase: Staff talent performances (music, dance, storytelling) celebrating Indian heritage
  • Rangoli Art Display: Patients, children, and staff contribute to a colourful mandala for positivity and beauty
  • Chaplaincy Blessings: Interfaith prayers and spiritual messages for collective healing
  • Traditional Snacks Distribution: Carefully selected sweets (e.g. ladoos, barfi) and herbal teas offered with allergen labels
  • Patient Diwali Packs: Especially in elderly, palliative, or maternity wards—small kits with battery operated electric mini lamps (diya), card, and message of hope
➤ Distribution of Diwali cards or small tokens to Hindu inpatients
➤ Opportunity for patients to join Aarti via bedside livestream or chaplain visits

🎥 Post-event, we encourage teams to share stories with the wider NHS to spread awareness and inspire others.
