Supporting Hindu Culture in the NHS
About us

Who We Are

The Hindu NHS Network (HNN) is a national, community-led initiative dedicated to supporting Hindu staff, patients, and communities within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Rooted in the timeless principles of Hindu culture  of service (seva), non-violence (ahimsa), compassion (karuna), and duty (dharma)—we work to ensure that the Hindu voice is heard, respected, and celebrated across the NHS.

Founded by healthcare professionals and community leaders, HNN is driven by the belief that true healthcare honours not just the body, but also the mind and spirit. Our mission is to promote culturally competent care, advocate for Hindu representation in NHS leadership, and create a supportive environment for Hindu staff to thrive.

We are a growing network of:

  • NHS doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and staff who proudly identify with the Hindu faith

  • Chaplaincy leaders and spiritual advisors supporting patients in moments of need

  • Community volunteers helping bring healthcare and faith together

  • Advocates and educators working to embed Hindu perspectives in NHS strategies

  • Students and professionals finding voice and community within healthcare

Hindu NHS Network (HNN) Supports Hindu Staff and Patients in the NHS

The Hindu NHS Network (HNN) is a vital platform that empowers Hindu staff and patients across the NHS to preserve their spiritual identity, cultural values, and personal wellbeing in a system that often lacks faith-based representation. We believe that when healthcare honours cultural and spiritual roots, it fosters deeper trust, better outcomes, and a more compassionate care experience. HNN exists to bridge this gap—ensuring that Hindu professionals and service users are not only respected but celebrated within the NHS.

Supporting Hindu Staff

Hindu professionals—doctors, nurses, allied health workers, porters, managers, and administrators—form a significant and respected part of the NHS workforce. Yet, many face silent struggles: underrepresentation in leadership, lack of cultural recognition, challenges in expressing their faith, and limited access to community-specific wellbeing resources. HNN supports them through:

✅ Faith-Sensitive Staff Wellbeing Facilitating meditation, yoga, and mindfulness sessions rooted in Hindu practice to manage stress and promote mental clarity
Providing pastoral and spiritual support from trained Hindu chaplains and mentors Creating safe spaces and circles where Hindu staff can share, reflect, and uplift each other
✅ Celebrating Identity and Culture
Organising NHS-wide Hindu festival celebrations (e.g., Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Navratri) to promote joy, visibility, and community
Supporting staff in taking religious leave, fasting, and prayer observance
Sharing cultural education materials that help line managers understand Hindu practices
✅ Leadership and Representation
Running career development workshops and mentorship programmes to build Hindu leadership capacity
Encouraging and supporting applications to NHS boards, EDI panels, and national forums
Advocating for fair recruitment, retention, and promotion policies for Hindu staff

Supporting Hindu Patients

Every patient deserves to feel seen, safe, and spiritually supported during their healthcare journey. For Hindu patients—particularly the elderly, those at the end of life, or people with limited English proficiency—this can be challenging within a system that may not always understand or accommodate their beliefs. HNN ensures culturally competent care by:

01

✅ Enhancing Spiritual Care

  • Providing access to trained Hindu chaplains and spiritual advisors in hospitals and hospices

  • Assisting NHS trusts to offer appropriate last rites, prayers, and rituals during end-of-life and bereavement care

  • Ensuring availability of sacred texts, devotional items, and prayer resources for patients in need

02

✅ Advocacy and Awareness

  • Advising clinical teams on faith-sensitive care plans that respect Hindu beliefs about karma, illness, healing, and the soul

  • Promoting the use of vegetarian, sattvic food options in hospitals with clear religious labeling

  • Supporting the creation of quiet spaces and multi-faith rooms for worship and spiritual reflection

03

✅ Cultural Education for Clinicians

  • Delivering training for NHS staff on Hindu customs related to illness, death, mental health, modesty, and family roles

  • Publishing guides for healthcare teams on how to respectfully engage with Hindu patients and their families

  • Encouraging patient experience leads to engage with local Hindu communities.

Promoting Inclusion Through Unity

At its heart, HNN is about community and connection. We act as a bridge between Hindu patients and staff, their families, NHS institutions, and policy-makers. We advocate for a healthcare environment where culture is preserved, spirituality is honoured, and every person is treated with dignity.

We uphold the ancient Vedic principle of:

“Sarve bhavantu sukhinah, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ”
May all beings be happy, may all be free from illness.

By standing for faith, fairness, and fulfilment, HNN empowers Hindus in the NHS to live and heal in accordance with their values—without compromise, and with full support.
