The launch event, hosted by Mr Jas Athwal MP, with a keynote address from The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

Hindu NHS Network , a national initiative for over 1.2 millions Hindus in UK(2021 census)  including 10.1% nurses, health visitors and over 8% doctors has been developed to foster a supportive professional environment for Hindu healthcare staff while also improving culturally sensitive care for Hindu patients across the National Health Service.

A Network for Both Staff and Patients, Strengthening Wellbeing, Inclusion, Cultural Respect, and Patient-Centred Care Across the NHS

The Hindu NHS Network stands as a shared platform for Hindu NHS staff and Hindu service users, recognising that both the workforce and patients require dignity, respect, and cultural inclusion in healthcare settings.

The Network affirms that all NHS staff and patients have the right to follow their culture and values at work or during treatment, in line with equality, diversity, and human rights principles.

Dr. Rajeev Gupta, Senior NHS Consultant said:

“This Network is not only for staff—it is also for patients, families, and carers. Hindu patients should feel at home within the NHS: able to access vegetarian meals, spiritual support, cultural facilities, and the freedom to honour their values. When staff and patients feel respected in their identity, the quality of care, safety, and trust in healthcare all improve.”

Ravi Bhanot MBE,  added:

“The NHS is strongest when it is compassionate and inclusive. The Hindu NHS Network provides a space where Hindu staff and patients can be heard, valued, and supported. Our mission is to promote wellbeing, cultural understanding, and excellence in care across the health system.”

The Network aims to;

• Support the wellbeing, identity, and leadership development of Hindu NHS staff

• Ensure Hindu patients have access to culturally appropriate chaplaincy, pastoral support, spiritual guidance, and end-of-life care

• Advocate for culturally sensitive dietary provisions, particularly vegetarian and sattvic options, across hospitals and care settings

• Promote environments where Hindu cultural practices — including prayer, meditation, bhajans, festivals, and family-centred care — can be observed respectfully

• Encourage NHS trusts and services to develop inclusive spaces, resources, and staff training that reflect the needs of Hindu patients and carers

• Embed Hindu values into patient experience and staff wellbeing frameworks

Hindu culture and philosophy are among the world’s most ancient, diverse, and profound traditions.

The Hindu NHS Network is an independent, voluntary, national network supporting Hindu healthcare professionals and Hindu patients throughout the NHS. The Network promotes inclusive practice, culturally sensitive patient care, professional leadership, staff wellbeing, and community partnership. It collaborates with NHS Trusts, integrated care boards, academic institutions, and national bodies to improve health outcomes and enhance compassionate, person-centred care.
